22 February 2023, Kota Samarahan -

Professor Tatsuhiro Ohkubo of Utsunomiya University, Japan, paid a courtesy visit to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). He was welcomed by Mr. Dev Nath Kaushal, AP Dr. Nariman Singmamae, and AP Dr. Helmy Hazmi. Prof. Ohkubo, a professor in the field of forest ecology and silviculture, is no stranger to UNIMAS, as he has been coordinating the international exchange programme between Utsunomiya University and UNIMAS for many years.

Currently, Professor Ohkubo is accompanying a group of Utsunomiya University students who are in UNIMAS for two weeks as part of the student mobility programme called EduTour2023. The students will be learning the English language through the Faculty of Language and Communications (FLC).

Prof. Ohkubo’s visit is an extension of the ongoing discussion for potential cooperation between the faculty and Jichi Medical University, which was facilitated by Prof. Ohkubo himself. The collaboration discussion began in May 2022, when the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit, accompanied by the Dean, Prof. Dr. Asri Said, were in Japan to sign the memorandum of agreement with Chiba Paediatric Orthopaedic Group (CPOG). During that visit, they had the opportunity to visit Utsunomiya University and Jichi Medical University.

Prof. Ohkubo was shown around the faculty, including the Anatomy Museum, where he had the chance to use the Anatomage, a cutting-edge system for visualising anatomical structures that the faculty uses as a teaching aid when teaching anatomy to medical students.

Also, he was given a tour of the Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC), which featured a variety of simulation modalities, including task trainers, standardised patients and high-fidelity simulation.

Although it was a short visit, Prof. Ohkubo appeared impressed with the introduction of the FMHS and the organised education system here. He will convey this to Prof. Kumagai and Prof. Nishino, both from Jichi Medical University, and hopefully they will start collaborating soon, starting with the Department of Paediatrics, which is led by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ameenudeen.
