Kuching, 27th October 2020: For the first time ever in the history of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Faculty of Engineering UNIMAS is hosting its flagship conference, the 13th International UNIMAS Engineering Conference 2020 (EnCon 2020) fully ONLINE.
In the opening ceremony speech, UNIMAS Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, highlighted that the conference’s theme "Empowering Industry and Transforming Society through Engineering, Technology and Management will act as a medium to build networking and collaborations between academic and industrial professionals for the benefit and betterment of the society, despite being held in the ‘new norm’. EnCon 2020 is Faculty of Engineering UNIMAS’ first international conference to be held through a virtual platform.
Despite being held online and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference received overwhelming response from the public. According to the Organising Chairperson, Ir. Dr Ting Sim Nee, EnCon 2020 features more than 120 technical papers with about 300 registered participants, making this year’s edition of the conference as the biggest EnCon held by UNIMAS. The conference features four keynote speeches by prominent local and international speakers.
The 2-day conference is supported by the State Government of Sarawak and is co-organised by Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Institute of Science and Technology India (SRM) A Community-Centred Educational Model for Developin Social Resilience (ACES) and Geomineral Science Department (JMG). The event has also attracted industry sponsors such as Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad, Sarawak Energy Berhad, WenHong Plastic Industries Sdn Bhd, Mainline Enterprise Sdn Bhd, PCSS Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Maltimur Resources Sdn Bhd, P.L. Consultants, Polybuilding Construction Co, United G.I. Products Sdn Bhd, HoiFu Group (M) Sdn Bhd and Pertama Ferroalloy Sdn Bhd.
The conference also features five special industry tracks and ten technical presentation tracks within the 2-day conference. These sessions will bring together research topics and industrial experience concerning the latest developments in science, engineering and technologies. During the ceremony, a total of nine memorandums of agreement (MoA) and memorandums of understanding (MoU) were also announced between UNIMAS Faculty of Engineering and several industry players and other universities. The four MOAs are with Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Sarawak, Universitas Kristen Indonesia, CWorks Technologies Sdn Bhd and Universitas Pembangunan Jaya, Indonesia. The five MOUs are with Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Monash University Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Tekmark Sdn Bhd, D’Amante (M) Sdn Bhd and Universitas Lancang Kuning, Indonesia.
