Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is delighted to share that our alumnus, Jonathan Peter-Oswin Dason is the first graduate from a local Malaysian university to be awarded the fellowship of the prestigious Schwarzman Scholars Class of 2023. The elite scholarship is for a one-year master’s programme in global affairs at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, ranked first in Asia as an indispensable base for understanding China’s role in global trends.

The Schwarzman Scholars is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. The scholarship body stringently selects students of demonstrated academic excellence from different countries, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds to receive the award. One must also demonstrate exemplary leadership skills to be named a Schwarzman Scholar.

Jonathan pursued his Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) International Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIMAS. The 2018 graduate, who was also the recipient of the UNIMAS Chancellor Award, serves as the vice-president of the United Nations Association Malaysia Youth (UNAM Youth) alongside a career in telecommunications.

He represented Malaysia for a 10-month long youth leadership programme, the 4th ASEF Sustainable Young Leaders Development Summit Post-Covid-19 which was related to the 13th ASEM Summit in November 2021 in Cambodia. The programme played a big part in connecting Jonathan with the Heads of States and governments from 51 Asian and European countries as well as the political leaders from the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat.

Jonathan continues to be involved in higher education events and passionately works towards building a stronger youth development ecosystem in Malaysia. On the weekends, the enigmatic young man gives back to the society by teaching high-school students a class titled Future Diplomats, focusing on public speaking, debate, empathy, and international relations.

Jonathan Peter-Oswin Dason truly reflects the quality and uniqueness of a UNIMAS graduate. Congratulations, Jonathan, and know that you are an inspiration to the rest of us.
